Tips to Stay Fit on Your Vacation

Oftentimes, vacationers report that they undermine their fitness goals during their trip away from home. However, you don’t have to derail your diet and fitness routine when you’re on a vacation. When you implement a few simple changes into your vacation itinerary, you will be able to stay on track with whatever fitness goals you have:

Walk or Bike Instead of Drive

You might rent a car on vacation, or you might opt to ride in a car-sharing service. Sometimes, this is necessary to get to wherever you’re going, but if you’re traveling less than a mile, walk. And if you’re traveling less than 3 or 4 miles, bike. It’s easy to keep fit when you’re getting your steps in and burning energy while biking.

Let’s say your family has a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant a mile away from the hotel. Instead of driving there, you could walk there together. This way, you’ll get your steps in walking there and back, so if you don’t have time for a formal workout like you usually do, at least you’ve walked that day.

There are services that allow you to rent bikes, and this makes it easy to keep active while on vacation. Whether you need to make a quick trip to the store, you’re going to an event in town, or you’re going shopping, biking is a great idea to make transportation more conducive to your normal workout habits.

Let’s say you go shopping and purchase a lot of things. You could always rent a bike to get there, and a car to go back. Biking a little is better than not at all!

Order a Salad with Meals

On vacation, you go out to eat more than you do at home. So, be sure to order a nice salad with your meals. When you do this, you’ll be eating a satisfying salad before your meal, which will curb your appetite a little before the main meal.

Eating a salad is a great way to avoid overeating your main course—which will be more caloric—but even more importantly, it’s a perfect way to get in more greens while on vacation. That’s important to your overall health.

Schedule Activities That Keep You Active

Look into activities near your hotel that will get you and your family moving. Whether it be racquet sports, swimming and diving activities, hiking, or another fun activity, there are so many different activities you can do on vacation that will get your heart rate up.

You don’t have to spend all day doing activities like these but try to do one activity a day that gets you active. Exercising can be fun, so choose activities that you enjoy.

Keep Healthy Snacks with You

If you’re on vacation and you get hungry between meals, you might have no choice but to purchase a snack. This might tempt you to choose something unhealthy in the middle of the day, like fast food. To avoid choosing snacks that aren’t as nourishing, keep a few snack bags full of filling and healthy treats.

You could make a protein-packed snack by putting cheese, grapes, and almonds into a container. Also, you could pack almond butter and apple slices, or hummus, carrot sticks, and pretzels. The possibilities are endless. You can create a filling and delicious snack that will hold you off until the next meal, without making an unhealthy choice.
