4 Swimming Exercises That are Perfect for Summer

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, it can be something you look forward to, especially if you decide to do swimming exercises in the water. The summertime is the perfect time to start participating in water exercises.

Whether you choose to exercise alone or invite a few friends to join in, there’s nothing better than getting a good workout in from the pool. Let’s discuss swimming exercises for the summer season:

What’s the Importance of Swimming?

There are so many benefits to swimming. For one, it’s an incredibly fun activity, but there are crucial health benefits, too.

Swimming helps increase your endurance, strength, and heart health. Also, you’re more likely to stay trim and within a healthy weight range if you’re committed to swimming. Over time, you’re going to tone your muscle if you swim, and finally, swimming is a great workout that works almost all of your muscles.

Importantly, swimming helps your mental health. Because swimming is relaxing, it reduces your stress levels, which leads to a more positive mood. Also, there are other unique benefits to swimming, like the fact that you’re likely to improve your flexibility, posture, and coordination.

What Should I Consider Before Swimming?

The most important thing to consider before you start swimming is whether or not the body of water that you’re swimming in is safe. You can choose to swim in a pool, a lake, an ocean, or another body of water, but if you choose a naturally-occurring body of water, make sure it’s safe.

What are Swimming Exercises I Can Do?

Here are a few swimming exercises that you can try. You’ll get in a good workout, and you’ll have some fun doing it:

Traditional Laps

When you think of swimming, it’s likely that you think of swimming laps. Whether you were on the swim team or you were not, it’s easy to get into swimming laps. There are four primary strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. All of these strokes are different, so you’re bound to find one that you love.

Kickboarding

The kickboard is another tool that you might have found if you were on the swim team, but it’s the perfect tool to get in a good workout. With a kickboard, you can swim laps by holding on to the board and propelling forward. This is not going to work your arms as much as swimming regular laps would, but if you’re looking for a lower body workout, this is for you.

Water Running

Running does not have to be done on land. It’s interesting, but it’s actually more beneficial to run while in the water for many reasons. For one, it’s a low-impact way to get exercise, so you’re less likely to get injured when compared to on-land running. The exercise is as easy as it sounds, simply run in the water. Go as fast as you can for the best workout. Try running for five-minute periods.

In-water Ab Workouts

Just like you can run in the water, you can do crunches in the water, too. So, try to target your abdominal muscles by doing a few crunches in the water. Simply float on your back in the water along the side of the pool, and then, using your abs to support yourself, curl your lower body up like you would doing crunches on the land. You’ll never go back to on-land crunches after you see how good of a workout it is in the water.
