Gradually Reducing Salt and Sugar is Good for Your Healthy Lifestyle

bigstock-Inscription-Sugar-And-Salt-On--202102951Even if you know that cutting down on salt and sugar would be good for your healthy lifestyle, you may not get around to doing anything about it. When you’re feeling swamped with responsibilities at home and at work, it’s hard to take on another major project. It’s just easier to operate on autopilot doing what you usually do.

Well, the good news is that you don’t have to do anything radical because small changes can have a dramatic impact. That’s a good thing because the average American is eating about twice the recommended amount of salt and sugar daily. Here are some small tweaks you may not even notice.

Eat more whole foods. Most of the sugar and salt in your diet comes from processed food. Just getting most of your calories from fresh vegetables, fruits, and other natural fare will dramatically lower your total.

Experiment with other seasonings. You’re less likely to miss salt if you seek flavor elsewhere. Use more onions, celery, garlic, vinegar, and lemon juice.

Cut the sugar in your coffee in half. If you taper off on the sweet stuff, you might not even notice the difference. Eventually you could be happy drinking your coffee black or with just milk.

Give your self time. Your taste buds will adjust until any drink or food seems normal with less salt and sugar. You’ll start appreciating natural flavors more.
