Summertime is here and with it comes all the fun in the sun, days at the pool, trips to the beach and favorite hot day foods! Whether you are team crabfeast or team snowballs (or maybe even both!), you can enjoy all that summer has to offer while staying healthy and strong. Relax and enjoy any travel or downtime you may have by mindfully approaching your days and planning ahead with your meals and workouts. Vacationing and staying fit can go hand in hand with these simple tips.
One of the most effective ways to stay healthy while vacationing is by planning ahead with your workouts! Prepare yourself ahead of time by finding out if you will have a gym in your hotel, or maybe one nearby that offers day passes. If there isn’t a gym nearby, you can pack some resistance bands and plan on doing full body workouts in your house. Save your favorite workouts on your phone, download the music that gets your heart pumping, and be ready to exercise ahead of time when the day permits. Take advantage of your nearby scenery with walks on the beach, laps in the pool or ocean, hikes on trails for an invigorating and refreshing way to work out. Adjust your workouts according to the space you are staying in, so that once you are settled in, you are prepared and ready to sweat.
Eating on vacation doesn’t mean giving up your healthy way of life when you plan ahead! Keep hunger at bay by storing healthy protein in your purse or bag. Beef sticks, olive packets, tuna pouches, protein bars (read the labels to make sure it’s not full of sugar!) and trail mix are all excellent ways to get protein in when hunger strikes. Have your groceries delivered upon your arrival to keep fresh fruits and vegetables at hand. Snack on hydrating fruits like watermelon, oranges and cucumber as a delicious way to stay satiated while also increasing your vitamin c intake on the beach! If you plan to eat out on vacation, enjoy yourself! Plan ahead by looking at the menu and finding the best source of protein and veggies for you. Grilled shrimp and salad are an excellent summertime source of protein and phytonutrients to keep you strong and healthy!
During these summer months, be sure to prioritize water and electrolytes, especially if you are traveling. We release extra water while sweating in the hot sun, and ours bodies crave the extra minerals. Staying hydrated also prevents overeating with the added benefit of keeping your skin plump! Sipping on lemon water or electrolytes throughout the day keeps your energy up too, so don’t skimp on your water for all the added benefits.
Most importantly, summer is a great time to rest and reset, and best of all de-stress! Let yourself relax and enjoy the sun, the extra vitamin D (safely with coverage of course) and slower pace of life. Prioritize your days with your favorite workout, best source of protein, ever-flowing jug of water and you’ll come out of summer feeling stronger and healthier than ever.
