One of the biggest reasons people avoid the gym isn’t laziness—it’s anxiety.
Feeling like:
• “Everyone is watching me”
• “I don’t know what I’m doing”
• “I’m not in shape enough to be here”
These thoughts are more common than you think. I know I had a few of those thoughts/feelings when I walked into a gym for the first time.
The Truth…
Most people in the gym:
• Are focused on themselves,
• We all started exactly where you are.
• Fitness is a journey- we’re just at different points of it.
You belong here just as much as anyone else.

How to Overcome Gym Anxiety
1. Start With a Plan
Uncertainty can create anxiety. Having a simple workout gives you direction and helps build confidence.
2. Go During Off-Peak Hours
Less crowded times = less pressure and less chances of feel like ‘everyone is watching me’.
3. Stick to the Basics
You don’t need fancy workouts. Simply focus on:
• Machines – fixed motions to avoid injuries.
• Basic movements – don’t go on day 1 trying Olympic lifts.
• Simple routines – Full Body machines, Upper/Lower body machines for 4×10-12 reps.
4. Bring Support (or Hire It)
• A friend can make it less intimidating. This is how I started, they had a routine and I modified it for me.
• A trainer can guide you step-by-step. We have an Elevate program here at Merritt Clubs designed to help you.
5. Remember: Everyone Starts Somewhere
I wish I could say I picked up a bike and rode for 10 miles without falling. It took time, some failure, to help my confidence.
