How to Reward Yourself After a Tough Workout

How to Reward Yourself After a Tough Workout

A tough workout deserves recognition and reward. Often, when you’ve pushed through and accomplished something new, whether that means reaching a new goal or simply getting through a tougher workout than you could just a few days ago, you’ll find that a reward makes that accomplishment all the sweeter. Fortunately, there are plenty of great rewards that can help you make the most of those moments.

1. Get a Massage

A massage is a great way to relax after a tough workout. In addition to serving as a great reward for all the hard work and effort you’re putting in, a massage can help increase blood flow to your muscles and aid in the recovery process. A massage can also help fight overall muscle soreness, which makes it a great choice when you’ve been working hard to meet your goals.

2. Relax in the Sauna or Steam Room

Post-workout, consider kicking back and relaxing in the sauna or steam room. The heat from the room will help you relax and wind down after a tough workout. The heat from the sauna or steam room can help you relax, soothe tense joints and muscles, and improve overall mobility, which can be key when you’ve put in a hard workout in the weight room or on the cardio equipment.

3. Set Aside Time to Relax

You’ve met your goals. Now, it’s time to play just as hard as you’re committed to working. After a tough workout, set aside time to relax and enjoy some of your favorite activities without guilt, whether that’s reading a book, watching TV, or spending some time scrolling on your phone or playing your favorite mobile game. After all the effort you’ve been putting in, you’ve earned the right to do something that helps you relax and feel reinvigorated.

4. Track Progress Toward Your Milestones

Often, when you’re pushing yourself through your workouts, you’re aiming for major milestones: a faster mile time, a heavier weight, or longer stamina. Track progress toward those key goals! Keep a journal where you document your accomplishments, including progress toward your goals. After a hard workout, write it down! Note the places where you struggled and the achievements you made as you pushed through. Keeping that documentation and celebrating your successes can help push you toward greater heights on your slower days, when you may spend more time struggling.

5. Give Yourself Financial Rewards

Sometimes, paying yourself to accomplish your goals and push through those tough workouts is the perfect reward. Set a goal for yourself: something that you’d like to have, but which wouldn’t normally be in your budget. Each time you complete a hard workout or reach a milestone, set a little money aside toward that goal. Before you know it, you’ll have the money to purchase that much-desired item.

6. Let Yourself Have a Treat

After a tough workout, you need to refuel your body. While you might want to make healthy choices, especially if your goals include diet or weight loss, you can reward yourself after a workout with a little treat. A little frozen yogurt, a smoothie, or even a protein bar can all serve as the pick-me-up you need to dive back in and tackle the rest of your day after you’ve accomplished something hard.
