According to the NIH, osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, or when the structure and strength of bone changes, increasing the risk of fractures. Because of the lack of symptoms, it is often defined as a “silent” disease until a fracture occurs.

Osteoporosis occurs in both men and women but has a 4 times higher prevalence in women – particularly post menopause or, more specifically, after the age of 50. Aging in both men and women is the highest risk factor. On average, the most rapid bone loss occurs at age 74-79 in men and 65-69 in women. One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will experience a fracture as a result of osteoporosis.

As we see earlier and more rapid bone loss occurring in women, both men and women are at risk of osteoporosis without intervention. Want a safe and accessible treatment? Start strength training.

Strength training can assist in slowing down bone loss and, in some cases, even build bone density. Increased strength, better posture, improved balance and increased confidence in activity, are additional ways strength training can positively impact quality of life while decreasing the fall risk and fractures.

The best time to start is now! Whether you’re in your 20’s or your 80’s, strength training will provide lasting benefits. If you’re not sure how to start, contact your club for a complimentary session with a personal trainer.
