In a world driven more by technology, wearable fitness devices and apps have become more than just a trend — they’re starting to transform the way we approach health and fitness. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced athlete, incorporating wearable tech into your daily routine can be a game-changer. The integration of smartwatches, heart rate monitors, fitness trackers, and mobile apps has opened a new realm of personalized fitness and it’s right in the palm of your hand.
Traditionally, we think of wearables as just simply a means to count steps, but they do much more than that. They provide real-time data like heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, sleep patterns, and caloric burn. Combined with understanding how to interpret that data and incorporate things like nutritional tracking, habit reminders, and goal setting, these tools offer a 360-degree view of your health more than ever before.
Here is how we can begin to implement that technology into our daily routine and use it as a launching off point or the enhance what we’ve already been doing:
- Set Clear Fitness Goals: Whether it’s 10,000 steps per day or a 30-minute cardio session, start with achievable goals that your device can track. Consider something that is very easy to achieve in the beginning so we can build off of small successes.
- Use Sleep Tracking to Optimize Recovery: Most wearables monitor sleep stages. Not only do we want to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, we also want to understand and adjust your routine based on those insights. You also can monitor your breathing rates and determine how good your sleep quality that night based on breathing rates.
- Leverage App Integrations: Sync your wearable with apps like MyFitnessPal, Strava, or Apple Health to consolidate and analyze your progress. This puts more information in one space so you’re able to evaluate your progress and overall patterns.
- Track Heart Rate Zones: Use your device to exercise in the right heart rate zone for fat burning, endurance, or peak performance. Cardiovascular health is critical to overall health and longevity. Remember this phrase, “Cardio adds years to your life, Strength adds life to your years.”
- Schedule Regular Check-ins: Set reminders to review your weekly stats and reassess your goals based on your performance and patterns. Schedule time with one of our fitness professionals to deep dive and break down all facets of your routine to set yourself up for the best success!
Start small. Begin tracking one or two metrics (like steps and sleep), then gradually expand. Technology should empower you, not overwhelm you. If you need help in understanding what metrics to start tracking first or what your focus should be, contact one of our fitness professionals or wellness coaches to determine what the next best step for you could be!
