Four of the Best Exercises While Dealing With Back Pain

Just because you may be living with temporary, acute, or chronic back pain doesn’t mean you have to give up an active lifestyle. You have several options to choose from that will keep you in tip-top shape.

Swimming

Swimming is a great exercise to do with back pain because not only is it self-paced, but the water supports the weight of your body as you move, making it low-impact. Equipping a buoyancy aid may make the exercise even easier to complete, and you can remove it as you feel more confident and as you strengthen your back. Group-led water exercises are also an option that uses the buoyancy of the water to support your back as you work out with hand weights, walking, or even machines.

Yoga

Yoga is extremely beneficial as stretching has been shown to reduce inflammation which is one of the principal drivers of back pain. Although yoga can be a solo activity, having an attentive instructor in a group that is aware of your concern can give special instruction to make it as easy as possible for you.

Cycling

Whether it’s at the gym on a machine or a bike out in the open, cycling is a fantastic cardio workout that doesn’t stress your back too much. Your back may find either a recumbent or a standard exercise bike more comfortable, but both will allow you to get a good workout in. Elliptical trainers are a third option if you find standing easier – as every individual’s situation is different, you can experiment to find which works for you best.

Walking

Even a simple walk around the neighborhood can do you good, and it doesn’t require any equipment at all. While jogging or running is not recommended due to being higher impact, the forces exerted during walking are much lower and won’t strain you nearly as much.
