Halloween isn’t just about costumes and candy (though all of those are sweet) but it’s also a time to get moving. So, this spooky season, I drew up some inspiration from our favorite horror villains.
1. Michael Myers (Halloween)
He never ran and kept his pace basically the same throughout every movie. That slow and steady walk that somehow was haunting. It shows that walking is still one of the best forms of exercise. You don’t need to sprint every time to see results. By staying consistent you build endurance and you strengthen your heart and burn calories. Park further away.
2. Jason’s Strength (Friday the 13th)
Jason Voorhees wasn’t known for being the quickest of our horror movie villains, but if you were to pick a strongman out of the bunch, he would be it. Please don’t grab a machete to train like him, just simply start with your compound motions. Squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press and barbell row to help increase muscle mass, protect your bones, and make every task easier. Then maybe, take a dip in Crystal Lake?
3. Freddy’s Flexibility (A Nightmare on Elm Street)
Yes, Freddy haunted your dreams, bent reality and at times his bounty in some odd ways. Now, you don’t need knives for fingers to get the same result. Adding flexibility and mobility to your routine will pay off in the long run. Think of adding some form of stretching, yoga, mobility drills into your daily or weekly routine to prevent injuries, create better mobility for everyday movement, or relax and decompress. Think of it as a defense against the ‘nightmare’ of stiff joints.
4. Ghostface’s Cardio
Regardless of if you saw the Og’s or the ‘Requel’ you know that cardio can save your life (at least until the sequel). Whomever the Ghostface was/is, they were always up for the chase regardless of our protagonist’s cardio fitness. Try this ‘Survival Sprint’ to stay in form against Ghostface. Run for 1 minute, walk for 2 repeats. If you continue this challenge, over time you can shorten or lengthen the sprints. 1-minute run and walk, then 2-minute run and walk.
5. X Files-like Teamwork
Though Scully and Mulder often had different approaches to the known and unknown, by the end of 30 minutes they managed to work together. If there’s one takeaway you get from this besides being goofy, it’s move often, build strength, stay flexible and keep you cardio strong.
