The Whole-Body Benefits Of Barre: Exercise Incorporating Ballet, Yoga & Pilates

Finding the time and energy to sneak a workout into our busy, daily schedules can feel daunting at the best of times. However, that doesn’t have to mean that it’s impossible. Finding fun, new exercise routines can help spice up your physical fitness and get you excited to work it into your daily habits. One kind of cool workout is barre.

What is barre?

According Healthline, a barre workout “involves dance moves commonly found in ballet, as well as other forms of exercise like yoga, Pilates, and aerobics.” Check out the video here to get a glimpse of how the well-trained instructors use these mindful movements to construct a total-body barre workout.

What are the benefits of barre?

Another article from  Very Well Fit discusses that barre classes come in many varieties, focusing on strength training, cardio, and/or flexibility. Additionally, some of the benefits of barre include improvement of posture, balance, and coordination. Successful barre routines require participants to be mindful of their posture and alignment. This works through things such as where your head sits, how your hips are positioned, and ensuring your knees are bending correctly.

Furthermore, from the same article, a couple of other benefits are increasing flexibility and strengthening the “mind-body connection.” Flexibility is one of the main focuses of a barre exercise routine. How the muscles and joints move together is key to doing many of the movements and exercises done throughout the workout. By focusing on executing these isometric body movements and knowing where each muscle, bone, and joint are throughout, we can work to “block distractions and focus on the mind-body connection,” says Sarah Lindberg.

Other benefits, include muscle strength (core, arms, thighs, glutes, and pelvic floor), better balance, muscle endurance, and increased bone density.
